A special Grandmother

One of BK's favorite phrases to me is "That looks like something my grandma would wear". He says this lovingly of course as it is referring to his Grandma L. And yes, while I am drawn to the style of the 50s and 60s and cardigans and comfort shoes, there is much more that just fashion style that I would choose when emulating Grandma L. She was a woman of strength, loving and supportive of her family in all endeavors. She was a communicator, writing many letters and cards each day. She loved pretty things and entertaining her club ladies. She was a record keeper, remembering birthdays and anniversaries. She was a woman of faith, playing the piano and teaching Sunday school up till her last Sunday. She was fearless, always up for trying something new, whether it was swimming in her 90s to learning to use a Kindle. She was a great baker of cookies her grandchildren adored. She was a teacher that touched many lives for the better. She loved steadfastly, was wholeheartedly loved, and will be greatly missed.

Another reason why I love vintage is that sometimes it's a cost effective way to purchase some of your favorite brands. I would never want to plunk down the cash for a retail priced version of these bags, partly because I'm cheap, and partly because I couldn't afford it! I lucked out finding these bags at a mere fraction of their original prices and love the classic shapes. Also, it's kind of nice to know that they still hold up and look pretty good 30 years down the road!

DIY: nail polish + rhinestone jewelry

Tom Binns was my first exposure to rhinestones and neon, and soon after, lots of bloggers went on a DIY spree and created their own amazing low cost versions. While the idea of painting over perfectly good vintage jewelry pains me, this is a great idea for jewelry that is in less than stellar condition (darkened rhinestones for example) or in colors that you might otherwise not wear. Because isn't that really what it's all about? To be able to wear and enjoy items, not just let it sit untouched. In the above picture, I took a rhinestone bracelet and painted it alternating navy and hot pink, then finished with a coat of clear gloss.

This bracelet went from 1990's pink ice rhinestones to a more current hot pink.

This was a fun and simple project (watch out for paint fumes) and I really like the idea of breathing new life into jewelry that might otherwise be forgotten or saved in hopes of a special occasion. Every day is an occasion!

This beauty was found in Missouri at my favorite antique store. It's in excellent condition, all beads present and accounted for, and I adore the art deco-ish arches/scales, similar to my new favorite Pyrex obsession. Can't wait to take this little beauty out on the town!

Black Friday

I know a lot of people avidly avoid Black Friday sales but I was not one of them this past weekend. In fact, I was with the group of 400 people lining up at the mall at 6am on Black Friday. Is that a bit crazy? Sure. I don't really mind crowds and the thrill of the hunt energizes me. To prep, I do advance detective work on what the sales are going to be (ie 50% off sale at Anthro) and then have a mental list of things to look out for. Then I go in, I peruse, I grab, and I buy (my shopping version of veni, vidi, vici).

This year, I did get some of the items on my mental wishlist, and was pleasantly surprised by the Madewell sale. I scored big time and above are some of my favorites: a chambray shirt, a cozy sweater coat and two maxi skirts--just in time for the cooler weather!

Last Friday evening, Grechen, Sydney and I attended

a lovely event at Sikara featuring the new Tess Dress holiday collection.

The space at Sikara is gorgeous and filled to the brim with beautiful jewelry and gemstones.

Here Sydney tries on the coolest silver cage ring, one of my favorites of the evening

Theresa's holiday line of cocktail dresses feature her trademark fit and attention to details and

Trying out the sweater over a dress look. It's a great way to extend the life of my summer dresses and change the look up. The length of the sweater is probably the trickiest part. I tend to panic if I don't have my waist defined with a belt b/c then I feel sloppy. Fortunately, a cropped sweater is a fair compromise and I was comfortable in this outfit all day *and* it hid the enormous amount of Thai food I consumed at dinner!

Today's post is for the petite ladies. It's great that brands are now coming out with petite lengths for pants and jeans but I will say that a 30-31 inch inseam is sadly still too long for me. Seriously. I wear a 27 inch inseam for flats and maybe 29 inches for heels. That's another reason why I dislike pants because my proportions are usually off (longer torso, short short legs). Heels are a great way to offset some of that, hence my endless search for comfort shoes with a heel--and these No. 6 clogs certainly fit the bill, giving me 3 inches of height but are wearable and walkable every day. Next, these Madewell wideleggers are close to the perfect pant because of the shape of the leg. It hugs in at the thighs and knees then flares out at the bottom, giving the appearance of length. From a gal who doesn't love pants, these are actually my favorite so that's saying a lot! I highly recommend them and they're on super sale right now as well! ps. I still had to hem them but other than that, they're still pretty perfect!

Welcome to daylight savings time and a new change of scenery! Since it's pitch black dark when I get home now, B and I are trying to figure out another suitable location to take outfit pictures. (well, I am, B naively thought we'd just stop outfit pictures all together--sucker) As you can see, not only do we have limited knowledge on how to operate our fancy camera, we also aren't quite sure about lighting. A love hate relationship

I have a love/hate relationship with jeans and pants. I love that they keep me warm, but I absolutely hate how they look on me. Due to my body shape (pear, bottom heavy), it's challenging to find pants that fit properly, let alone look good once they're on. I've gravitated towards wide leg jeans and pants because I guess camouflage is part of human nature. However, a wise stylist kindly told me that baggy pants weren't exactly flattering either and encouraged me towards trying slimmer pants. I'm still not going all out emo skinny jeans or leggings, but here is my compromise. With the weather turning cooler, I've either got to figure out how to pose in pants or find me some fleece lined leggings to wear with my beloved dresses and skirts. Am I the only one out there that hates pants? *crickets*

I never fail to visit a H&M when I'm near one and recently found this gem of a top in NYC. I've been trying to curb my spending at H&M because it's rare that I keep a piece of theirs longer than a season or two. Still, they are a nice way to try out a trend for minimal dollars and this secretary blouse with a tie front is impressive at just $10. The fabric is actually quite lovely and light and drapes well and the print works perfectly for fall. I'm plotting on how to wear it next, perhaps under a blazer or cardigan!

This past weekend, I put away most of my summery items and greeted my fall sweaters, skirts and pants. I adore my summer wardrobe most of all so there are a few items I kept out to wear during these last few days of 80 degree weather. This is my last hurrah for my J.crew fish skirt this year and I'll be sure to store it at the top so it'll be the first thing I see in March/April!

I forgot to save a picture of my actual outfit so instead we just have this close up and an opportunity to talk about my favorite accessories of the moment! This vintage tiny kissing mice belt is definitely a favorite among my animal belt collection (just don't tell the others!) and I recently acquired this vintage bracelet with a crescent and star motif. These expandable bracelets were popular in the 1940s during the war, given to sweethearts by their soldiers. Part of the reason why I love vintage items is that I always feel like there's a bit of history attached to them, and hopefully happy memories as well.

Color pencil skirt

The story of my bright colored pencil skirt:

I've always loved bright pencil skirts (Jcrew's to be exact) and so...
was ecstatic to find this one at an estate sale for $1. One dollar!
It fits perfectly through the waist and hips, though
of course I had to get it hemmed, but still, one dollar!
There's a bit of linen in the fabric so I was wrinkle city by the end of the day
Especially after a 45 minute commute.
I thought about photoshopping
Then realized I don't know how to photoshop
And I like to keep it real anyway (ie. too lazy to learn how to photoshop)
So here's the picture, wrinkles and all.
And amazingly after I hung up the skirt, the wrinkles fell right out. $1!
I cannot get over the lovely bright blue and of course, thought it paired perfectly with stripes.
And of course...it was $1!

Tomorrow's the big day for our second hunt.gather.style pop up shop at Touch of Sass from 1-4pm at Touch of Sass (5th and Lamar). We've squirreled away some really awesome vintage items: animal brooches, belts, fur collars, tweed skirts, jewel tone wool blazers and flirty secretary blouses. We've also done quite a bit of closet cleaning and there are some great sweaters and contemporary items (even a DVF wrap dress!) in the shop as well. Hope to see you there!

Today's outfit picture is a two-fer. I like the one on the patio because it shows that my skirt isn't actually dragging on the ground and plus Link is in it (sorta). B likes the one on the right because the background is nicer, I'm just not so sure about the shaft of light on my torso :) Outfit pictures are still trial and error around here and while I'm excited that we're getting a new camera lens soon (surely it'll be magical enough to get us clearer/better pictures without having to actually learn how to use the darn camera), fall/winter is catching up to us and soon it'll be pitch black dark in the evenings. Which means we're going to need a new location (possibly inside) and time (oh no not mornings!) for outfit pictures. Any tips? What's your outfit picture routine?

Vera Neumann is one of my favorite artists. I am obsessed with her textile prints as evidenced here and am so happy that Anthropologie collaborated and created the clothing brand "We Love Vera", bringing her wonderful prints to the masses. Fall is almost upon us in Texas! We're hopefully going to have our last 100 degree day and tomorrow will be a chilly 88 degrees :) I took advantage of some mega sales earlier in the year to bulk up my fall footwear collection. Normally when the weather turns colder, I hunker down and hibernate in my Uggs and looking stylish falls by the wayside. This year, I'm determined to change that and decided that comfortable but stylish footwear would be my starting point.

and skirts and also with jeans rolled up to the ankle.

I got this little DVF jacket from a front stoop sale in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. These fashionable gals had a rack of their vintage and gently used clothing for sale and I picked up this winner for $10! Also they complimented me on my shoes and I didn't detect any mocking or sarcasm in their tone so score one for comfort shoes! I'm usually shy with mixing patterns but went with it anyway. Why I Love to Thrift

It’s like a sport (so that counts as exercise right?)

There is nothing like the thrill of the hunt. Some people walk into a thrift store and are instantly overwhelmed. I see possibilities and treasures lurking in every corner. My first foray into thrifting began when I was 10. We had recently moved to the US when my mom took me to the Salvation Army for school clothes and I remember being transfixed by the winter coats with touches of fur at the collar. It took a while for my love for thrifting to develop because honestly if thrifting is your only option, it’s not quite as fun. So I am fortunate that at this point in my life that thrifting is an enjoyable hobby where I can supplement my wardrobe and hone my hunting skills.

It’s eco-friendly
Thrifting is about reusing a product and giving it new life and function. However it's still important to buy responsibly as sale goggles are a danger even at thrift stores. Just because something is cheap doesn’t mean you should get it as it only increases waste. I remember standing in the middle of a huge thrift store in Chicago wondering where all the merchandise came from and where it all will go. I am guilty of being a mindless consumer so now I mentally bring my fashion wishlist with me to stay on task.

It’s affordable
Thrifting is an affordable way to supplement your wardrobe or try on trends that you may not be willing to spend a lot of money on. Fashion is cyclical and what comes around goes around so there are many ways to choose items that will still feel current. I look for skirts (easier to fit versus pants), boys blazers (great shrunken look at the sacrifice of the full mobility of your arms), dresses, and accessories such as belts and clutches. Another tactic I use is to scan the racks for specific colors like cobalt blue and deep purple which are welcome additions to my wardrobe this fall.

It all goes towards a good cause
I once had an acquaintance in college question why I thrifted because wasn't I taking away clothing from those who need it? After much thought, I realized that thrift stores exist to serve needs either by providing items at a lower cost, or by creating jobs or donating proceeds towards those that need it. The thrift stores I frequent are ones that fund hospice care, children’s homes, and domestic violence shelters; and Goodwill frequently advertises that shopping at their store helps create jobs and provide funds for job training.

It’s addictive
What I love about thrifting is that you never know what you're going to find. I truly believe in the old adage that one man's discards are another man's treasure. Thrifting is also a bit of a history lesson, a photo album into certain seasons of your life. More often, I'll find something that I have worn in the past hanging on a rack in a thrift store. I'll spot terry cloth shorts from the 80s and fondly recall my favorite romper set I wore constantly as a kid. I glimpse the 90s floral slip dresses and skirts that flash me back to high school when I wore them with my Doc Marten boots. And then there was that Banana Republic phase when I was fresh out of college and diving into my career. Most excitingly, the best part about thrifting is when I come across something vintage (defined as being at least 30 years old so the 80s really are creeping up to us now!). But that's another story for another day!

A cobalt blue silk skirt has been on my wishlist and I was so excited to score this gorgeous one while thrifting. Granted this isn't a very exciting outfit right now as it's our 85th day of 100 degree weather. But I have big plans for this skirt for the fall/winter--I envision pairing it with cropped sweaters and tights--can't wait! Oh and my animal belt obsession continues with these darling kissing frogs. I'm officially starting a support group. Who's with me?

The Comfort Shoe Paradox

So I just think I went a bit too far in the grandma shoe department. I love Worishofers beyond belief for their comfort and am needing a good pair of shoes to wear for my upcoming trip to NYC. It's going to be below 70 degrees and all my walkable shoes are either sandals (cold toes), flats (need more arch support) or too high (a true Texan stereotype--we drive everywhere). Enter these babies: they're half sandal, half clog which should keep my feet relatively warm, and have the best arch support for trekking all over the city for vintage treasures, lobster rolls, bagels and more shopping. I'm torn between feeling practical about my shoe choice to the horror of wearing orthopedic shoes in the most fashionable city in the country. I might be brave and sneak a picture for you guys while I'm there. Or maybe it's best not to have any photographic evidence...
