Fall fashion: Madewell lookbook

So excited to see the Madewell fall lookbook out today!  I've got a pretty good handle on spring/summer dressing but can always use the inspiration for cooler weather wear.  Here are some of my favorite looks I hope to recreate this fall (which starts in November in Texas)

Will be on the lookout for thrifted/vintage full skirts like this to pair with sweaters

Happy that I can wear my button front skirts into the fall and love the pairing with a comfy top

I cannot wait to get my hands on some of Madewell's widelegger jeans!

Absolutely adore the stripes with a maxi look (yay stripes!)

Great maxi skirt idea

I love how effortless the layering looks here
(usually I feel like a stuffed sausage when I attempt to layer)

Did you checkout the Madewell lookbook?  Any favorites?

Vintage panther belt

This panther belt came in the mail this past weekend and I couldn't wait to wear it out.  It was a bit weird to wear a huge buckle at my waist--I felt like a Care Bear all day.  *Care Bear Stare*

Mociun dress

This Mociun dress (found by way of Moss) is officially my favorite weekend dress.  It's easy to put on and the fabric and style keeps me cool in this 100 degree heat.  I am once again photo-bombed by Link.  I'm surprised B cut him off in this picture.  Usually the pictures he takes are more of the dogs than me.  In one instance, my head was cut off so he could get a good angle of Link.  Priorities priorities.

Vintage fish dress

This dress is definitely in my top three of vintage finds.  It's also one that has been the most transformed.  In it's original form, it was a maxi, three sizes too big and had a huge 70s collar.  The print was what sold me and I took it to my alterations lady where we conspired to change it into an entirely different dress. I received a lot of feedback yesterday when I wore it, including "I love your dress" from the female population and "wow, those are fish!" from the male population (thanks Captain Obvious).

Vintage fox belt

The pups weren't very cooperative this time round with pictures.  Since I'm relatively new to fashion blogging, I'm still trying to figure out the best time to take outfit pictures.  Fortunately B is willing to indulge me for 5 minutes out of the day to help.  However we're still having scheduling problems.  We are trying to get into a routine now that when we get home, we go immediately outside to take these outfit pictures and then we start our evening routine of making dinner, running errands, working out, etc.  This is easily foiled if B gets home more than 15 minutes later than me.  My natural compulsion is to change into my "play clothes" when I get home from work, so it's a bit difficult to hang around in my work/day clothing when my yoga pants or pajamas beckon to me.  So, that's why some days I have outfit pictures to post (self control imposed) and some days that are a scratch (yay PJs!).

Vintage lookalike: Anthropologie Sailboat Skirt

When I first saw the sailboat skirt at Anthropologie, I immediately had visions of stripes and boat shoes dancing around in my head (versus sugar plums).  It is a relatively good price point for a skirt as well but somehow I resisted and went hunting instead for a vintage version.  I found this skirt for a steal and I think it makes a nice substitution for the Anthropologie version.  There's a similar one on etsy if you're interested (at about half the cost of the Anthropologie one)

Alfred Shaheen dress

After writing this post on Alfred Shaheen for the h.g.s shop, I remembered that I still had these outfit pictures from the happy hour spent celebrating Grechen's new site: AustinFashionSeen.  I adore Shaheen prints and this is definitely a favored dress in my wardrobe.  I have the hardest time wearing my favorite outfits because the hoarder in me just wants them to sit in pristine condition waiting for just the right occasion to make their debut.  I've been trying to push myself to wear more special pieces lately because life's too short and my closet's too small.  How about you?  Do you tend to save outfits or is Carpe Diem your fashion motto?

Malia floral dress

Over half of my vintage dresses are by Malia and I adore her bright colors and fun prints.  Kirby decided to pose as well, he's such a pro, note the slightly crossed front paws, aka the Tinsley

4 in 1

I chose this outfit this weekend with the following criteria in mind:  1.  it had to be able to withstand 100 degree heat, 2. it had to be relatively cute and put together since we'd be estate sale hunting, and 3. it had to be comfortable so I could eat my weight in kettle corn at the Georgetown farmer's market.  This outfit stood the test and also had an unexpected added bonus of 4. allowing me some modesty while moving a whole bedroom suite and packing it into our SUV (soon to be featured on my other blog!).

Trying out a different spot to take outfit pictures but B and I couldn't figure out the whole light/shadow thing so we'll probably be back to the ol' patio next time.  That way the dogs can get in the pictures too because face it, they're really the stars of the show.

Stripes ahoy!

As you may already have guessed, I have a thing for stripes.  When I saw this vintage dress, it was like a match made in heaven.  Except for the tiny fact that it wouldn't fit around my hips no matter how much tugging and shimmying. My alterations lady and I have had great adventures taking in, hemming and remaking various vintage dresses and tops, but this was our first time in letting out a dress.  What then took place the next week can only be described as a comedy of errors as she had to keep finding places (the sides, the back) to let the dress out before it would fit me.  I'd be more embarrassed about sharing this story if it weren't for the fact that I ADORE this dress and it was worth all the shame faced moments of going in to try it on and have her say "oh so we still need more room?"  Moral of this story: keep your cheetos close, but your alterations lady closer.

Another view

We spent the first half of our vacation at a lovely beachside apartment and then moved to the Crane for the second half.  Our balcony overlooks the cliffs and the surf of the Atlantic ocean.  The view is phenomenal and we're enjoying sitting out on our lounge chairs while reading and listening to the waves.  Here's an outfit I wore to lunch (a buffet!) out by Bathsheba Rock.

Two-fer

Today's outfit post has a special guest!  Normally Link steals the show but this time B has so kindly agreed to let me post this picture we took using the self timer.  I love the flurry of activity after you hit the timer as we try to get into position and then the excruciatingly long wait while we smile and mutter to each other behind clenched teeth "is it taking yet?" before the camera finally clicks.  There were many hilarious outtakes that will not be posted here, you'll just have to trust me.

Beach wear

First day on the beach!  Here's the view we have from the patio of our little beach apartment, gorgeous isn't it?  I decided to pair trusty stripes with my new hot pink shorts.  I rarely wear shorts (I'm grandma self conscious like that) but couldn't resist these from Jcrew.  The fit is actually really great if you're a dewdrop shape like I am (thanks Lucky mag!) and the 5 inch length provides perfect coverage for the more modest.  (I would've gone for the 7 inch but B politely suggested that they look like men's shorts)  I went for hot pink b/c I figured if I were going for shorts, I'd go big or go home and couldn't be more pleased with the color.  Somehow I feel like the neon-ness diverts attention away from my less than perfect parts.  Or maybe just blinds the viewer so everything looks hazy.  Wow this is a lot of reflection about an outfit.  I think I better head out for a swim now!

Noah's ark

I tried out the self timer feature on my camera today and this was the best that I got.  Pulled out another thrifted maxi skirt today as I wanted to be comfortable while sitting and tagging all our items for the Hunt Gather Style shop.  I love the quirky animals on the bottom of this skirt and as Sydney and Grechen so kindly pointed out, it's a Noah's ark pattern, hence a skirt perfect for a sister wife.
